All Moms are Amazing!

Motherhood encompasses so much. It is not easy.

We have all been impacted by it in one way or another. It does not matter if you have your own children (a child) or not, everyone has been and will always continue to be impacted by mothers.

The role (potential role) of mothers is so important and the children you have been blessed with or may be blessed with are little wiggling miracles.

I had a Geneticists tell me it’s amazing any of us turn out at all or even somewhat normal. (But really…what is normal?) Nothing will replace that moment a new little human being is placed in your arms for the first time. It is then that you realize you are in total control of the potential outcome of this brand new little life! How exciting is that!

Actually…It’s terrifying!!

All the sudden you are thrown into a definite life changing moment. It’s like stepping up to a starting line on a running track and hearing a gun go off signifying the start of a race! (You don’t even know what distance you are running!)

As you try and figure out why you are even running in this race everyone leaves you in the dust.

Like those dreams where you’re supposed to run and you can’t. You are paralyzed! But in that moment you realize, “I’m racing! I got to go!”

And you run!

With gusto!

You’re not sure where the strength came from but it’s there. Then you start to catch up to the group and pass people and your thinking “Look at me! I’m doing it!”

As you continue racing you realize you’re gaining on the other runners. Not only are you in the lead but there is one more corner to the finish line and you are ahead! You could win this race.

All that’s left is the straight away, and then it hits! Your legs begin to move in slow motion because your shoes feel like 10 pound weights. It doesn’t matter how hard you try, you can’t go any faster and the race seems to last forever!

As you endure this moment you notice something! Everyone else in this race is in slow motion as well!

Obviously, motherhood is not a competition but once you start this journey there is no going back or starting over.

Often times, you don’t even know what race you’re in but you know you got to go!

This journey at first may seem overwhelming and you’re thinking “Why am I doing this?” But as you start to run it gets easier, you find that you can do things you didn’t even know you could do.

Your capacity to grow, understand, learn, endure and love overwhelms you and you gain speed. Sometimes there will be head winds to overcome and on that last stretch what strength you thought you had will be tested to its limit, to the point you want to stop and quit but you know you can’t. You have to finish!

Motherhood will be the most important journey you will take during your lifetime because there is no finish line. “Once a mother, always a mother.”

This is why motherhood is an amazing role. This is why you, a mother, are amazing.

You Matter!

During my own journey through motherhood (I have 5 kids ranging in age from 12 to 22) I have had those fleeting moments of inadequacy where I think what I’m doing is so mundane and ordinary. All of us, I don’t care who you are, has an inherent desire to be better, to do great things and fulfill personal dreams. So how do we do this stuck in a house cleaning grimy little fingers with some unknown substance that mysteriously coagulated onto every little crevice!

"How many times are you seriously going to have to sweep the floor?"

Than as quickly as those thoughts enter my head they dissipate as soon as one of my wonderful little beings enter back into my focus and do or say something so profound that I’m thinking,

“Where did you come from?”

Motherhood, if you will let it, is pure joy.

Ultimate joy, a feeling that will come over you of peace and fulfillment, because you know what you are doing is so important and at this moment in time (these moments go by so fast) this is where you belong.

You are raising the future of your family, community and country. They will go on and make their own impact becoming a better you and go on to do great things and fulfill dreams because of you, their mom.

This is huge and this is why you matter!

Journal Entry:

May 10, 2010

It is Memorial Day weekend. The kids don’t have school tomorrow. They are all sleeping in the big canvas tent with cousins and their friend Maggie. This was a very special sleepover because it just doesn’t happen very often so they were all very excited. I think there are 12 kids out there right now. Scot (dad) is out there with them so there is extra room in my bed and guess who is in it? Yes, my almost 5 year old little Abby! I’m laying here reading and I hear her say “Mom”? “Yes Abby?” I turn towards her and see her big brown eyes dancing at me and she says, “I wuv you mom!” It doesn’t get much better than that.

Earlier that day Jesse (who is 6 now, I can’t believe this) was talking to me because he was nervous to sleep downstairs. His dad over heard this and said “Well Jesse, aren’t you a big boy now?” Jess said, “Dad, I’m only a half of a big boy. I’m still half little boy!”

Sit back and enjoy this journey called Motherhood!

You’re reading this because you have started your “Motherhood Journey” or you are about to. It’s always scary and inevitably at the beginning there are moments of “What did I get myself into?”

Once you get started it becomes easier!

Yes, there will be times when you run out of steam and you get passed causing discouragement and discourse but I promise you this, there are greater moments ahead!

Stay the course and continue to be the Amazing Mom that you are!
